Colchester’s finest alt/prog rock band The Kuru Smile are set to take the Essex Rocks stage by storm. They are a band to be fussed about seeing - quite simply fantastic live, and for free you can see just what we mean. Honest, no-nonsense rock when you need it most on a (hopefully) hot summer’s day!
”The Kuru Smile are a multi talented band with an established skill at mixing things up, different sounds, tempos, vocals and at times exhibit some very different musical influences.” (B.H. Radio)
Lead, bass and drums, The Kuru Smile are the embodiment of a stripped down perfect rock band. Yet the three of them come up with a full, unique sound that Essex Rocks describe as “psychedelic prog-jazz-metal-core jamming with some shiny equipment”. That sounds like a recipe for success if ever there was one.
The bands members are:
• Daniel Lodge – Lead vocals & guitar
• Tom Donovan – Bass & backing vocals
• Sarge – Drums & backing vocals
These three Essex boys really are the original DIY band, writing, producing and recording everything. They were formed from the embers of underground UK bands The Parnell Deception, Pornstar and Phoenix Butterfly in December 2005.
To quote Lastbroadcast, "The Kuru Smile have been snowballing their way through the UK underground since their December '05 inception, working their fingers to the bone in a fit of musical masochism in order that their self proclaimed "experi-metal-alt-rock" can be cherished by many - even going as far as setting up their own recording studio and record label. Two EPs down, and the question is: has all the effort been worth it?
“I'll start by saying that their new album is a heavy CD. It's three tracks deep yet outweighs the majority of recent mainstream alt-releases in musical proficiency and passion by, at least, a substantial crate of forged iron. Citing such industry monoliths as Radiohead, Tool and A Perfect Circle as direct influences, it's obvious where the forceful sound has been creamed from, especially noticeable in the slicing vocals which could possibly be Maynard James Keenan's pissed up cousin from Ealing. The rest of the music is equally pleasing, combining substantial passion and thoughtful structuring to deliver a final product that lies somewhere between the aforementioned Perfect Circle and ….And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.
“So yes, all the effort has been worth it - these three little musical parcels contain barbed wire and aural honey in equal measure, and point to only bigger and better things from The Kuru Smile in the future. Keep your ears peeled for the full length album in February 2008". Wow!
Yes, they are tight and talented, and take their music seriously, with good reason. Come and see for yourselves at the Essex Rocks tent around 4:15. www.myspace.com/thekurusmile
DID YOU KNOW – The Kuru’s Daniel appeared on Channel 4’s ‘The Diets That Time Forgot’ earlier this year. Brave fella!
